Former champion Marin Cilic from Croatia retired on Monday with an obvious injury from his first round match against the German Philipp Kohlschreiber, his earliest exit at the US Open after 13 attempts.

The 2014 winner was two sets took the lead, but retired early in the fifth game when Kohlschreiber led 2-0 after struggling with his serve.

It was Cilic’s first retirement in more than 800 career games and the first time that he failed the opening round at Flushing Meadows when he joined American John Isner as one of the high profile players who left the tournament on Monday.
