The iconic port of the industrial era was decommissioned Wednesday, July 21. This is only the third time this decision has been made by the organization. The committee underlined the irreversible loss of the attributes which made the value of the place.

The Unesco World Heritage Committee, meeting for its 44th session, voted thirteen votes to five for a downgrading of the port in the north-west of England, classified in 2004. Only two other sites previously had experienced the same. fate: the Elbe Valley in Dresden in Germany and the Arabian Oryx Sanctuary in Oman.

This decision follows the overdevelopment of the British port, which had already been warned in 2012 about the Liverpool Waters development project. “The project has since been implemented, as have other developments inside the property and in its buffer zone. The Committee considers that these constructions undermine the authenticity and integrity of the site “, explains the committee on the Unesco site.

The organization felt that the port of Liverpool, birthplace of the Beatles and the cornerstone of English and Scottish migration, had lost the authenticity that had earned it its World Heritage designation 17 years earlier. A football stadium and tall buildings “irreversibly damaged” the port of the port city, which the Unesco committee had warned on multiple occasions about its redevelopment plans. “Any deletion of a property from the World Heritage List is a loss for the international community and for the values and commitments shared worldwide within the framework of the World Heritage Convention”, regrets the organization.

The British government spokesperson said he was “extremely disappointed” with the decision. “We believe that Liverpool still deserves its World Heritage status given the important role that the docks have played in history and the city more broadly,” he added. Several local elected officials denounce a decision arbitrary taken by bureaucrats far from the city and uprooted from its reality as well as its economic necessities.
