After an eight-year hiatus, Kim Clijsters made a surprise return to the WTA Tour in February 2020 in Dubai, losing to Garbine Muguruza before two appearances (and two first-round losses) in Monterrey and then at the US Open. The Belgian player (38) announced Thursday that she would return to the courts, since she obtained an invitation for the tournament in Chicago (September 27-October 3).
” Thanks for the invitation ! I can’t wait to visit Chicago for the first time and get back to the circuit, ”Clijsters tweeted Thursday. Four times Grand Slam title – one Australian Open and three US Open – she has yet to win a WTA match since her return. During her last appearance, on September 1, 2020 at Flushing Meadows, the Belgian had battled before losing in three sets against Ekaterina Alexandrova (6-3, 5-7, 1-6).
