Four days after saving a match point against Amanda Anisimova in the second round, Karolina Pliskova advanced to the quarter-finals of the US Open. The world number 4 dominated the Russian Nastia Pavlyuchenkova in two hung heats (7-5, 6-4).
More in difficulty than usual in service (only 6 aces and 5 double faults), the 29-year-old Czech conceded her engagement twice, especially at the start of the second set. But she came back immediately and took advantage of too many errors (34 unforced errors for 19 winning shots) of her opponent, whose left knee and shoulder were dressed in a black strap, to win.
Finalist in 2016 (beaten by Angelique Kerber), Pliskova reached the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows for the fourth time in her career. She will face Bianca Andreescu or Maria Sakkari there.
