David Gaudu (24) is entering the last row of this 2021 season. The Groupama-FDJ resident has reached a new milestone this year by taking on more responsibilities in the absence of Thibaut Pinot for a good part of the year.
Winner in February Faun-Ardèche Classic, David Gaudu quickly convinced in WorldTour with a stage of the Tour du Pays-Basque and a 5th place overall. That’s not all ! Gaudu had an excellent Ardennes campaign with a Top 10 on the Flèche Wallonne and a podium on Liège-Bastogne-Liège. From this Tuesday, he will be at the start of the Tour of Luxembourg to prepare for the end of the season with the Tour of Lombardy in particular. “I looked at the stage profile, and it’s still very punchy,” he said of the Luxembourg stage race on his team’s website. So it may be fine for me if I’m in very good shape, especially the finishes at the top of the bumps. There is also a time of twenty-eight which is not necessarily to my advantage. It’s some accumulated work in the discipline though, and it’s something that I’m starting to like more and more. The Breton climber will be accompanied, among other things, by Thibaut Pinot at the start.
“I think this is my best professional season,” continued David Gaudu. I managed to win a legendary stage on the Tour of the Basque Country, in the WorldTour. I won in Ardèche against great competition. I made third in a Monument on the occasion of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. I have achieved results all season, with the exception of Paris-Nice where a crash deprived me of a likely good overall ranking. I was there from my first race until the Olympics so I have no regrets. For the moment, I believe that my season has been conducted as it should be, from A to Z, whether in terms of training, series of races, courses. I also hope and believe that I have met the expectations of the team. If I had to take stock now, I would say that I am rather happy. The disappointment of the Tour, which is real, will not tarnish my entire season. I’d rather have completed this season and finished eleventh on the Tour, rather than being sixth on the Tour and nothing else for the rest of the year. “
“First there is Milan-Turin, which has always been successful for me,” said David Gaudu. Then, the Tour of Lombardy obviously makes me dream. I would like to go for the best possible results, and if it’s not me, I hope it will be another rider on the team. If we manage to place one on the podium of the Tour of Lombardy, that would be very, very good. If it were to happen to me, I would have two podiums on both Punch Climber Monuments of the Year. It would be a real success. Indeed, Groupama-FDJ will also be able to count on a former winner: Thibaut Pinot! The Franc-Comtois is back in shape and enjoying a certain freshness. The two climbers will therefore be the two assets of the French team for the Tour of Lombardy. But neither will trample on each other. “It always went well with Thibaut,” said David Gaudu.
