More fear than harm according to the first elements of the rescue services. A 20-story residential building was devastated by a spectacular fire on Sunday in Milan (northern Italy), emergency services announced without reporting any casualties.
The building located in the southern outskirts of the Lombard capital caught fire in the upper floors, around 5.30 p.m. “The flames then spread to the lower levels,” causing thick smoke, the firefighters said on their Twitter account.
“The firefighters are progressing from apartment to apartment, breaking down the doors to make sure no one is left inside. But we are optimistic because there has been time to get out,” said the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, quoted by Il Corriere della Sera. “The inhabitants of the building were contacted by phone. There are no reports of missing,” added firefighters in the evening. About 70 families resided in the building.
According to the Italian daily, around twenty tenants were slightly intoxicated. Dozens of firefighters and ambulances were mobilized on the scene.
