Shane Lowry has a bullseye on his back but he believes he will fend off any comers for his Ryder Cup spot and dreams of doing an outstanding job to follow in the rookie footsteps of Leona Maguire in Whistling Straits.

The Clara man made it to ninth place in his 12th BMW PGA Championship on what skipper Pádraig Harrington described as a “hot seat” Overall standings and threatens to be overtaken by a large number of players.

The Austrian Bernd Wiesberger only has to occupy the 50th place to overtake Rory McIlroy in the European points list and to push the Holywood star into the world points list, what Lowry may knock off the side.

With Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose (if he doesn’t win) among those in need of a wildcard, Lowry is vulnerable.

But Lowry insists he is at one At the event where he traditionally plays well and is confident that he has done enough to warrant a wildcard, he wants to move up the list.

“There will probably be a few people shooting at me this week, but me am in a great position, “said Lowry. “If I come for a week to try and perform, Wentworth is one of the places I love to play.

” So hopefully I can go out this week and do a good job. I’ll keep an eye on it all week, of course. There are a lot of guys who have a chance this week. I am one of them. I think I raised my hand just fine, but who knows what Pádraig will do with the pickaxes on Sunday night.

“If someone knocks me out and I’m looking for a choice on Sunday night, I hope I’m one of those on the list and I think I just have to go out there and show what I’m made of.

“There are many (of permutations). There are many points and players here that can form the team this week. It only takes Bernd an average week and he should make it, but for me I’m trying to overtake the guys in front of me. So if I can go out and perform the way I know I should be fine.

“I think I’ve played enough golf in the last six months to warrant a choice, but who knows what they will think. It will be interesting to see what Paddy does on Sunday night.

“I think I’m a strong contender, but you don’t know what you think about pairings or who goes with whom, so I have to do my own thing . “

He seems totally relaxed and in a good mood after Baby Ivy arrived last week.

” I still can’t believe I have two children, “he said. “It’s crazy, but it’s great. The main thing, of course, is that both Wendy and Ivy are happy and healthy. It’s hard to leave and be here this week, but I have a job to do. “

He is also thrilled that The Open has been confirmed for Royal Portrush for 2025, adding,” Yes, it’s great that it’s going back quickly. Obviously, in my very biased opinion, it’s one of the best opens I’ve ever played in.

“But no, without making it into the win and all that, I think everyone you spoke to, the American players and the other players who played really enjoyed the venue and thought it was be one of the great opens they played.

“It’s great to go back in 2025. Look forward to it. You don’t have to worry about whether you will be there or not. I’ll be there. “

He has dreamed of playing the team for Whistling Straits since winning The Open and after seeing Maguire perform in Ohio he would like to make an impact similar to a rookie.

“Of course I have to move forward this weekend and make the team first, but when it comes next week I want to have as much influence as possible.

” I want to gain points when I’m there and do all these things, “he added.

” Leona literally had dream week last week. Didn’t she? She won the Solheim Cup for Europe last week and I would give anything to give the opportunity have to do this in a couple of weeks. ”

On the Challenge Tour, the newly crowned West of Ireland Amateur Champion Hugh Foley will make his tour debut as an amateur in the Big Green Egg German Challenge alongside Paul McBride, James Sugrue, Jonathan Yates and Gary Hurley.
