Athletes from Oceania will compete in athletics and four other sports when the region competes in the Asian Games for the first time, the Olympic Council of Asia said

Hong Kong: Athletes from Oceania – including athletic powerhouse Australia – will compete in track and field and four other sports when the region competes in the Asian Games for the first time, the Olympic Council of Asia said.

About 300 athletes from Oceania will be able to compete in the multisport extravaganza of triathlon, wushu, roller skating, weightlifting and athletics in Hangzhou, China this coming September.

“Oceania will be participating in the Asian Games for the first time,” said director general Husain Al-Musallam, according to a press release at an OCA meeting in Dubai.

“They will receive Medals of Honor (if they are in the top three) and they will not be included in the final medal standings.”

Oceania – Australia , New Zealand and a number of Pacific Islands – have never participated in the regional Olympic Games, but sporting relationships with Asia are growing.

At the Asian Games 2022 we rden 10,000 athletes compete against each other in 40 sports at 55 venues, with eSports celebrating its premiere as an official medal event.
