With “House of Gucci”, Ridley Scott offers himself a luxurious casting to return to the rise of the famous fashion brand and the assassination of Maurizio, his heir. But the project is not to the taste of the family.

Released on November 24 in our theaters, House of Gucci marks the realization of a fifteen-year-old project. Because it is in 2006 that it begins to be mentioned, already with Ridley Scott in the realization, and the duo Angelina Jolie – Leonardo DiCaprio in the main roles. But things will drag on and the film passes into the hands of Jordan Scott, daughter of the director of Gladiator, then Wong Kar-Wai.

Casting side, actors come and go and this is how Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz or Robert de Niro have been mentioned over the years. But it is with Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto or even Al Pacino that House of Gucci was born. A five-star cast announced in 2020 (and which Salma Hayek and Camille Cottin joined later) … but which was not to the liking of the family.

“We are very disappointed,” Patrizia Gucci, Maurizio’s first cousin, told The Associated Press following the reveal of the cast and the appearance of set photos. “And I say it on behalf of my family. [The film] steals our family’s identity to make a profit and increase the income of the Hollywood system.”

Having herself written a book on the subject (“Gucci, The True Story of a Successful Dynasty”, published in 2015 when the project was already launched), Patrizia Gucci notably points to “the choice of famous actors to play family members whose stories have little to do with the Maurizio Gucci murder, the lack of contact with Ridley Scott’s production company, and the inaccuracies in the book the film is based on. “

Adapted from “House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamor, and Greed”, signed Sara Gay Forden in 2000, the feature film was notably offered the services of Al Pacino and Jared Leto, in the respective roles by Aldo and Paolo Gucci. Much to Patrizia’s chagrin: “My grandfather [Aldo] was a very handsome man, like all Guccis, very tall and elegant, with blue eyes.”

“And he is played by Al Pacino, who is already not very tall whereas a photo [taken on the set] shows him big and small with sideburns, it is very ugly. And all the more ashamed that ‘he doesn’t look like him. ” Unrecognizable and decked out, among other things, with a bald head to look more like the character he embodies, Jared Leto is no more spared: “It’s horrible, horrible. I still feel offended.”

Directed by Ridley Scott, back in theaters a month after his impressive Last Duel (already with Adam Driver), House of Gucci has been in our theaters since November 24. And he looks back on the rise of the family empire as well as the romantic relationship between Maurizio and Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and the circumstances which led to the murder of the heir to the empire.
