ILOILO CITY – Fifty-one families in Sitio Boro-Boro, Barangay Dagsaan in Buenavista, Guimaras are staying either at an evacuation center or with their relatives as a precaution after a landslide in the area around midnight.

In a telephone interview on Wednesday, Dagsaan Barangay chairman William Eslao said the Persistent rainfall caused by the Lannie Tropical Depression would have softened the soil foundation, i.e. he caused a large rock to slide down the mountainside.

A Juvylee Talaron house was damaged, while Sandy Jimenez’s house was partially destroyed. He estimated the rock was the size of four carabaos together.

“From the top of the mountain the rock slid about 10 to 15 meters to the houses and continued to slide towards the lower part of the area,” he said .

He added that he will await the decision of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) or the municipal DRRMO on what to do with the situation when the weather is fine.

Of the 51 families 21 households live in Dagsaan Elementary School and the rest with their relatives.

Meanwhile, Buenavista’s MDRRMO officer Myrna Guillen said there are seven large rocks left in the mountain slopes that could roll down, when the surrounding soil has subsided.

“We will ask the MGB (Mines and Geosciences Bureau) to inspect the area and give their possible recommendations,” Guillen said in a telephone interview.

She added, that they would ask the authorities, etc. b they could blow the big rocks to pieces.

Meanwhile, a classroom only houses one or two evacuated families, depending on the number, to ensure minimum health standards are met, and face masks have also been provided for them.
