Briton Greg Rutherford, 2012 Olympic long jump champion who retired from athletics in 2018, is returning to the sport as a bob push athlete and competing for the 2022 Olympics.
“I’m coming back and intend to make history, “Rutherford said, according to the Guardian. “I know most people believe that it is impossible to go from trying sports to an Olympic medal in less than a year. But I disagree 100%. I’m not just doing this to get 25th place. I plan to train incredibly hard, join the team and then win a medal. And if we get the right sled and have the perfect run, anything is possible. Even gold. “
Rutherford retired from long jump at the age of 31 and referred to injuries. After his Olympic gold“ Super Saturday ”in London with titles at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2014 European Championships and the 2015 World Championships, as well as a bronze in In Rio, he left every big event.
His entry into the bobsleigh is the result of a lockdown practice and a push from Kaillie Humphries, a two-time Olympic bobsleigh champion for Canada who is up for the U.S. Olympic team for 2022, according to the Guardian .
If all goes well, Rutherford can become the newest converter from athletics to bobsleigh. Just last season sprinters James Dasaolu and Joel Fearon were push athletes in British sleds at the World Championships. Dasaolu and Fearon are two of ten British men in history taking a 10 second break at 100 m.
Some of the most famous track and field athletes who bi Olympic bobsleigh teams lden are Americans, including Lauryn Williams and Lolo Jones. In 2014, Williams became the fifth athlete to win medals at the Summer and Winter Games less than a year after bobsleigh.
Rutherford may finish sixth, although the British men finished eleventh at the World Championships in February.
The best British men’s sled at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games was 12th place. A British four-man sled, which originally took fifth place in 2014, was converted to bronze due to the disqualification of the Russians for doping. This was Britain’s only bobsled medal since 1998.
