FLOODING IN AGEN. Historic floods hit Agen (Lot-et-Garonne) on September 8, 2021. Torrential rains fell on the town in record time. Never had so much precipitation been recorded by Météo France in the town.

[Updated September 9 at 1:13 pm] Agen (Lot-et-Garonne) woke up with its feet in the water on Thursday September 9, 2021. Mud invaded the streets, cardboard boxes, bags, furniture and other objects. ‘pile up in the streets of the town, hit by flooding on Wednesday, September 8. Heavy rains hit the city during the evening. Two months of precipitation (138mm) was recorded between 7 pm and 10 pm by Météo France, an “absolute record”.

Certain sectors of the town have seen the water rise to 2 meters high, unheard of. “This historic record has led to the saturation of rainwater drainage networks and caused flooding in the city of Agen and several surrounding municipalities”, specifies the municipality.

In the early hours of the morning, the inhabitants, tired faces, cleaned up the damage caused, only material, as best they could, while the children nevertheless returned to school, the schools being all operational. No casualties were to be deplored, while help was called 300 times during the night. About 20 people were brought to safety and three people had to be relocated.

In the aftermath of this historic flood, the municipality of Agen announced that it was launching the procedures with the prefecture of Lot-et-Garonne in order to have the town recognized in a state of natural disaster. If it were to be successful, the approach should allow residents to be compensated more quickly by their insurance in order to repair all the damage suffered by the rising waters.

After this exceptional episode, the decline should not begin immediately in Agen. Météo France is forecasting new rains and thunderstorms throughout the day of Thursday, September 9, 2021 and warns of “further deterioration of rain and storm expected in the evening”. The Lot-et-Garonne department is no longer classified in orange vigilance but remains in yellow vigilance.

Météo France forecasts a “new intense rain-storm this evening in the Toulouse south with sometimes very strong accumulations of precipitation in a short time, up to 70 to 80 mm locally.”
