A thick mist transformed the landscape this morning at the seaside. Be careful if you are traveling on the roads affected by this loss of visibility which causes flight delays both on departure and on arrival. 7 flights were diverted to the airports of Bastia, Marseille and Genoa, and 2 canceled.

The mist invites itself on the Riviera coast on this December 31st. While several flights were delayed this morning, the airport management indicated, around 11:30 am, that the resumption of flights was effective. Earlier today, 7 flights were diverted to Bastia, Marseille and Genoa airports, and 2 canceled from the Riviera airport.

We have this relatively warm sea which generates humidity. This moisture, which makes up the misty mass is somehow trapped because warmer air acts as a cover.

Aside from the sun, which can make this haze thinner or fragmented, it was the wind that was mainly supposed to dispel it. No wind predicted today or tomorrow. The phenomenon should thus continue until Sunday, during the day. It is possible to follow the evolution of the situation in real time on the infoclimat website.

Be careful if this Friday you also plan to hit the road to celebrate the end of the year.

Safety advice The #fog on the motorway has the effect of reducing your visibility. This can sometimes even be very small! Be sure to follow our safety rules when driving on motorways in foggy weather. https://t.co/79tj9vJlrQ#A8

The very localized phenomenon, particularly around Nice airport, is gradually dissipating. For the time being, flights are delayed. The airport teams have been mobilized since very early this morning.

Between 5:50 a.m. and 6:50 a.m., the traffic was interrupted for the first time. The fog then dissipated, around ten departures were made. But for 8 hours, a new wave of fog forces us to stop traffic again.

These are 7 flights that had to be rerouted due to this meteorological phenomenon. But obviously, Sébastien Camelis, duty manager of Nice Côte d’Azur airport is confident. He specifies that departures should resume within an hour, arrivals a little later because the need for visibility is greater during the landing phase. 190 flights are scheduled for December 31 at Nice Côte d’Azur airport.

This haze was observed in various localities of the Alpes-Maritimes, from the first hours of the morning, on the Cannes and Antibes basin as well.

In the Var also at Mont Faron, near Toulon, the heights were still surrounded by mist at 11 am this morning.
