Formula 2 returns after two months of absence! The 45 minutes of free practice started off badly for DAMS, first with a problem with Marcus Armstrong’s car, then a huge plume of smoke coming out of Roy’s car. Nissany. It was much better on Carlin’s side as Ticktum set the fastest time and his teammate Daruvala came in third with Thà © o Pourchaire framing the two.
For tonight’s qualifying session, all the cars line up in the pit lane, awaiting the green light, the Hitechs in the lead. As is often the case, the best lap time changes hands in the first few minutes, and if we find Pourchaire first at the top of the timesheet, he is then beaten by Ticktum, then by Boschung, and finally by Piastri. The time set by the championship leader is good enough for him to keep the provisional pole despite other attempts by his competitors, including Dan Ticktum who improved, but remains third.
At mid-session, the track becomes calm again, all the drivers return to the pits and their cars are fitted with new soft tires. When everyone gets back on the track, the preparation for the final laps is quite chaotic, with many drivers seeking the aspiration of their competitors, while of course not giving the aspiration to another opponent!
Ticktum was the first to set a new time, but he did not improve, unlike Pourchaire and Zhou who climbed to fifth and third respectively. Boschung creates the surprise by positioning itself second. After a slow lap, the lap times are crazy! In just a few seconds, the poleman changes four times! It is first Lawson who dislikes Piastri, then Zhou passes in front, before Daruvala passes him by only 16 mil … and finally Oscar Piastri takes pole again!
The Australian takes all four points and will therefore start on pole on Sunday for the main race. He qualified ahead of Daruvala, Zhou and Lawson. Drugovich took fifth time, beating Boschung, Pouchaire and Ticktum. Vips and Beckman wrap up the top 10 and will take to the front row tomorrow for the number one sprint race of the weekend.
