Rotterdam, NL – The EBU Eurovision Song Contest 2021 (ESC) in Rotterdam, the final of which takes place this week, promises to be a great event despite social distancing regulations.

Although this is usually associated with a one-off staple , which millions of people in Europe and beyond love to see, this year’s 65th edition started last Saturday with a “Turquoise Carpet” event, during which all 33 semi-finalists were introduced to the world of Cannes.

The dated Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb’s chosen slogan “Be open, be positive” was taken to heart by the Dutch host broadcasters NPO, NOS, AVROTROS as well as the Netherlands-based OB companies NEP and United (EMG) Event to report.

To ensure flawless sound quality and reliability, NEP has developed its dual OB trucks UHD1 and UHD2 with 64-fader mc²56 consoles, Nova-Rout ing cores and the Lawo VSM broadcast control system to control the broadcast chain intuitively and smoothly. The two outside broadcast vehicles are set up in a main / fuse configuration for seamless protection switching.

Two additional mc²56 consoles with 48 faders as well as monitoring devices and outboard equipment from Lawo Rental are stationed in a separate music room, in which the music producer Tijmen Zinkhaan all delegations – and interval acts mixes. While all broadcast audio connections are streamed via RAVENNA / AES67, the audio signals for the PA at the Ahoy venue are provided by Dante cards in the Nova routing cores.

The choice of Lawo devices was a conscious decision by ESC 2021 sound boss Thijs Peters: “There was no doubt that Lawo consoles are a perfect fit for this prestigious task. They sound great, their routing capabilities are unlimited, our setup integrates seamlessly and can be conveniently and intuitively controlled via Lawo’s VSM broadcast control system. “

This all-star line-up will make it easier for broadcast mix engineer Andre Swart, FX engineer Marcel Korfage and music producer Tijmen Zinkhaan to create a sound basis on which all finalists at the Grand Final on Shine on Saturday, May 22nd.
