Football fans will be delighted for a month from this Friday, June 11. The kickoff of Euro 2021, postponed for a year due to the epidemic, can finally be given to the famous Stadio Olimpico in Rome for a first match which will oppose the Italian selection to Turkey at 9 p.m.

Before that, and as is traditionally the case, an opening ceremony will be organized to open the festivities. Dutch DJ Martin Garrix and musicians from U2 Bono and The Edge will offer a “virtual performance” of We Are The World, the anthem of the competition produced by the three artists.

A “virtual show which will give the opportunity to all the fans of Europe and the world to feel closer to the tournament”, assures the marketing director of the UEFA, Guy-Laurent Epstein, in a press release published by the organization . The show must, explains the organization, make it possible to recreate the sensation of a concert in a stadium. “The ground will be transformed into a blue and white flame, energy fields will be created from millions of particles of light and Bono will be projected onto the stage,” he said.

In its press release, UEFA presents an image of a European Cup trophy virtually recreated by thousands of lights. Two former glories of the Italian selection, Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta, will also be present, and the country’s air force should fly over the stadium before kick-off, according to the sports daily Gazetta dello Sport.
