Leaders of the West African group Ecowas suspended Mali’s membership after last week’s military coup, officials said.
Colonel Assimi Goïta, the country’s interim president, attended a weekend meeting where the decision was made in Accra .
Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey told the media that the bloc had urged Mali to immediately appoint a new civilian prime minister, respect a transition period of 18 months and hold presidential elections next February.
Ghana said the Mali’s stability is crucial if West Africa is to contain terrorist activity from the region.
Colonel Goita took power after ordering the arrest of interim President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, the BBC reported.
