NEW DELHI: Indonesia, along with four other countries, including the first-time Iran, qualified for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which will be hosted by India from January to February next year. </ Indonesia led Group C at the qualifier in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on Monday to secure their first appearance in the tournament, while Iran emerged as Group G winners on their first appearance.
Former champions Thailand , South Korea and the Philippines also qualified for the 12-person continental women’s drama, which will be held in India for the second time since 1979.
The tournament, which will also be the final phase of Asian qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup serves in Australia and New Zealand, will be held in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune from January 20th to February 6th n won Group E for the 13th time, while the Philippines won Group F with their 10th participation.
Thailand, which won the 1983 edition, was at the top of Group H for the 17th time.
Three other teams – winners of groups A, B and D – still have to qualify for the tournament, in which India is automatically qualified as host.
The Asian powerhouses Japan, Australia and China have also signed up in the last edition in 2018 already qualified as winner, runner-up and third place for the tournament.
Japan is taking part in the tournament for the 17th time, China for the 15th time and Australia for the sixth time.
The tournament should previously held in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Navi Mumbai, but the venues have been changed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar have been dropped and replaced with venues in Mumbai and Pune to minimize travel time for participants and an “optimal environment “to ensure a bio-safe bubble.
