A new health defense council is being held this Monday at the Elysee. The health situation continues to worsen but no new restriction measures are in principle planned.

More than 50,000 new cases recorded on Saturday evening, 11,000 people hospitalized and 2,000 patients in intensive care (figures which have doubled in one month), the “white plans” reactivated in several hospitals and a new variant – Omicron – which is looming … in a country hit hard by the fifth wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, stronger than the fourth, that Emmanuel Macron is preparing to hold, this Monday, a new health defense council.

Announced last Thursday by the Prime Minister, Jean Castex, who for his part found a normal life after being put in solitary confinement for ten days for having been detected positive, this defense council must “see if there is additional measures should be taken ”. It was brought forward by two days because of the trip that Emmanuel Macron will make on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Cher and Allier.

“We will look at the evolution of the situation. As always, we will, with pragmatism, proportion and with the same philosophy, an assessment of the situation and the responses to be provided. What was decided ten days ago were good decisions to take and the strategy we have today allows us to resist […] We must continue to vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate, to respect barrier gestures as we do. let’s do it, to hold the disciplines and to continue to organize ourselves ”, declared Emmanuel Macron last Friday from the United Arab Emirates, where he was traveling.

The measures announced on November 25, mainly the opening of the recall to all adults, have borne fruit. Last Saturday, Olivier Véran, the Minister of Health, announced that 10 million people had received their booster dose. It is still too early to say whether they will be sufficient to stop this fifth wave, but the executive does not seem ready to take new restrictive measures (return of gauges, massive recourse to teleworking, etc.).

Emmanuel Macron and his government hope that the measures initiated at the end of November will soon reach the peak of this fifth wave, as what seems to be the case in Germany. “Our compass is to avoid having to take general measures that concern everyone,” said Gabriel Attal, the government spokesman, in an interview published on Sunday in “Le Parisien”. If it is mentioned in several countries, the issue of compulsory vaccine is not on the agenda in France.

Between the acceleration of the recall campaign and better respect for barrier gestures, the government therefore hopes to pass this wave with the current measures (health pass, generalization of the recall). “We must limit the virus as much as possible, always having in mind to minimize all the constraints on our freedoms,” said Christophe Castaner, the boss of deputies La République en Marche, on France Inter on Sunday.

“Can the hospital absorb this new wave?” This is the question we ask ourselves every time, ”we note in the entourage of the Minister of Health. More than the increase in the number of cases, the situation in hospitals remains the key to the adoption, or not, of new restriction measures. If, for the moment, this situation is under control, the hospitals are also marked by a growing weariness of the nursing staff.

Covid: a peak expected “at the end of December or in January”, for Parisian hospitals

The opening of vaccination for 5-11 year olds should be initiated, on a voluntary basis. “For children under 12 without co-morbidities, the High Authority for Health has not yet made a decision. If it had to do it positively and a political decision was taken in this direction, the vaccinations could start at the beginning of January on a voluntary basis ”, specified Gabriel Attal.

The early closure of nursery and primary schools a week before the Christmas holidays – as Belgium has just announced – will be discussed on Monday but the executive would lean towards maintaining the dates of the holidays. It is not moving towards an increase in teleworking either. “It’s not just for the economy, but for the morale of the French. It’s very hard […] I hope that all French people can enjoy the Christmas holidays with peace of mind, ”Bruno Le Maire said on Sunday at the“ Grand Rendez-vous ”Europe1 CNews Les Echos.

One thing is certain: this fifth wave is already having an impact on the presidential campaign. Winner of the Republican Congress against Eric Ciotti, Valérie Pécresse will not hold a big meeting next Saturday Porte de Versailles as was initially planned.
