British Columbia’s health authorities will release their first COVID-19 update of the week on Monday, revealing how many new infections were registered over the weekend.

The update follows a live announcement from B.C. Prime Minister John Horgan, Minister of Health Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Commissioner Dr. Bonnie Henry. The trio are expected to discuss the importance of vaccination as the number of cases increases, particularly in the B.C. Indoors.

On Friday, health officials identified 54 new COVID-19 cases in the Vancouver Island area, among 663 new cases found across BC. over a period of 24 hours.

There have been 6,345 active cases of COVID-19 in BC. At the end of last week, including 391 active cases in the island region, as the province’s Ministry of Health announced.

Island Health on Friday identified the locations of 325 active cases in the region, including 170 in the South Island, 115 in the Central Island and 40 in the North Island.

Another person in B.C. died of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the province’s pandemic death toll to 1,785. The victim lived in the Fraser Health area.

According to the BC Center for Disease Control, there are currently eight people with COVID-19 in the island region in the hospital and five more are being treated in the intensive care unit.

By Friday, about 83 percent of eligible British Columbians had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 74.3 percent had received two doses.
