The first blockbuster Marvel superhero film to feature a Chinese main character has so far been snubbed by China, although it has been modified to appeal to the local audience.

However, China’s censors have yet to approve the film, fueling speculation that it may not be shown in the country at all despite its success in the North American market, where it grossed a record $ 90 million (£ 65 million) in four years – Labor Day Weekend.

Marvel Studios is hoping to replicate Black Panther’s cross-cultural success with an African superhero who grossed $ 1 billion worldwide and earned the company its first Oscars in 2019.
