In the 100m freestyle heats, Charlotte Bonnet only finished 6th in her race, but her time (53”67) allows her to qualify for the semi-finals to be held next night. (from 3:53 am French time).
For her part, Marie Wattel was not fast enough to qualify directly in the semi-finals (53”71). To continue her journey, she will have to go through a dam later in the Japanese evening.
In Wattel’s series, Australian Emma McKeon sent a message by smashing the Olympic record of Swedish Sarah Sjoestroem (52”13 against 52”62). She comes forward as one of the big favorites in the 100m freestyle. Her rival and compatriot Cate Campbell had a time of 52”80 in her series.
