Championship: Brentford beats Swansea in play-off final and returns to Premier League
After Norwich City and Watford, the identity of the third English club to move up to the Premier League at the end of this 2020-2021 exercise is known. This is Bryan Mbeumo’s Brentford, who won the Championship play-off final at the expense of André Ayew’s Swansea City (2-0), this Saturday at Wembley. The Bees made the difference in the space of 10 minutes in the first act of this final disputed in front of supporters of both camps. Ivan Toney first opened the scoring by scoring his 33rd goal of the season on a penalty caused by Frenchman Bryan Mbeumo, mown down by Freddy Woodman in the box (10th). Then Emiliano Marcondes made the break by resuming at the far post a perfect serve from Mads Roerslev Rasmussen (20th).
If Toney had the opportunity to weigh down the mark (21st, 81st) and the Swans pushed in the second act to get back into the game and hope to hang in overtime, the score did not budge. Jay Fulton even saw red for an involuntary but dangerous sole on Mathias Jensen (65th), leaving his teammates at 10 to try to achieve an unattainable feat this Saturday. After failing in overtime in the 2019-2020 final against Fulham, Brentford thus manages this time to materialize his great season and is rewarded for his efforts. 74 years later, the West London club made its comeback in the Premier League. For his part, Swansea will play for the fourth year in a row in the antechamber of English football.
