The epicenter of the earthquake is near Acapulco, 400 km south of Mexico City, where the tremor was felt. No casualties have been reported so far.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake on the Richter scale hit southeastern Mexico on Tuesday evening, the National Seismology Center said, without authorities reporting any casualties or damage at first .

The Center revised the earthquake’s magnitude to 7.1, which it initially estimated at 6.9. An American center, which initially warned of a risk of a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean, said a few minutes later that no tidal wave was to be feared.

The epicenter is 11 km southeast of Acapulco in Guerrero state, 400 km south of Mexico City, the Center said. Guerrero State Governor Hector Asutudillo said there are no casualties or significant damage at this stage. According to the AFP correspondent in Acapulco, a few aftershocks continue to be felt.

The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported on her Twitter account of power cuts in the city. She said the public transport network continued to operate.

The shock lasted less than a minute and was felt strongly throughout the capital, according to several AFP reporters. Video footage taken by an AFP reporter at Mexico City airport showed the magnitude of the shaking, with electronic billboards swaying strongly.

The last major earthquake in Mexico (also of magnitude 7.1) occurred on September 19, 2017 and killed 369 people. In 1985, an earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale killed 10,000 people. Some 30,000 others were injured.

Almost three weeks after the earthquake that killed 2,200 people and destroyed 61,000 homes, relief efforts are overwhelmed and residents are still waiting for help.

The toll from the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday continues to grow. The search for the missing continues.

The priority of the authorities and humanitarian actors is to avoid the concentration of people in large informal camps.
