The Raptors drop to 1-5 for the season, the worst record in the NBA after losing to the Celtics on Monday. Despite a strong start to the game, a nine-point lead after the first quarter, Toronto couldn’t handle the backlash from Boston as Jayson Tatum scored 40 points to secure victory.

After a 40-point breakout from All-Star striker Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics were able to claim victory on the second night of a duel against their opponent from the Atlantic Division. Fred VanVleet did his best to score 35 points, eight boards, three assists, and two steals, but the Raptors’ offensive battles and defensive rounds failed to overcome Boston’s retaliation.

If you missed any of the promotions, we have provided you with live updates, highlights and more from the competition.

The Raptors Bank showed some passion for Boston to work to shut it down, but the Celtics won. Jayson Tatum led with 40 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal, while Jaylen Brown finished with 19 points, five boards and three assists. Rookie Payton Pritchard had the best game of his young career, scoring 23 points and eight assists to move up in the absence of Marcus Smart.

For Toronto, Fred VanVleet had a team high of 35 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, but he was the team’s only consistent source of attack. Pascal Siakam’s last stat said he had 22 points, but a handful of those came late when the game was out of reach. The Raptors’ offensive fighting continued despite scoring 114 points and shooting 40. 4% of the field and 36. 1 of 3.

To keep things interesting, the Raptors have cut this down to a 10-point game of 2:24. Toronto’s bank forced Celtics head coach Brad Stevens to bring both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown back in to end the deal.

The Raptors emptied their bank after 121-102 in less than four minutes of play. Yuta Watanabe checks in, corrects a defensive rebound and buries a 3-pointer in the transition to breathe life into Toronto.

Jayson Tatum has up to 40 points that night, but with the Celtics in the lead 109-83 and less than 10 minutes, we may have seen the last of the young all-stars tonight. His last bucket to get to 40 had a very high level of difficulty.

Jayson Tatum’s 38 points were the highlight of the game, Jaylen Brown trailing him on 19 points. Boston sets fire to it and shoots 51. 6% of the field and 52. 0% of 3, 13 threefold down. Fred VanVleet has 31 points out of six threes, but he didn’t have much help. Kyle Lowry (13 points) and Pascal Siakam (15 points) are the only other Raptors in the double digits, and the team’s offensive battles continued with 38 shots. 5% of the field.

And things are out of control in Tampa. The Celtics have extended their lead to 21 at 93-72, less than three minutes from the end of the quarter. While Jayson Tatum was the standout player with a season high of 38 points, Boston’s rookie guard Payton Pritchard was 16 points and six assists off the bench when he shot 7-on-9 from the field.

Aside from Fred VanVleet’s 31 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, there wasn’t much to play. Pascal Siakam is double digits on 15 points while shooting 5-13 from the field and had this nice sequence early in the third quarter.

The Raptors opened the second half with Alex Len starting in the middle to reverse things inside. Toronto rallied 31:17 in the first half.

The Raptors were beaten 38-14 in the second quarter as their nine-point lead turned into a 15-point mid-term deficit in the first quarter. Jayson Tatum was amazing in the second frame and has 26 points in the first half. He shot 6-on-11 from the field, 4-on-5 from 3-point land and 10-on-10 from the free-throw line.

VanVleet was the only constant source of attack for Toronto with 18 points. Pascal Siakam got off to a good start in his first two 3s, but he only has eight points when he shot 3-on-10 off the field during the break.

And just like that. . . The Raptors lead has evaporated. The Celtics have a 27-6 run and are less than three minutes ahead of the half with 53:42. Jayson Tatum has caught fire and is up to 21 points in the half. He shoots a perfect 3-on-3 from a distance.

A 3-pointer with transition point from Jayson Tatum reduces the Raptors’ lead to just four at 36:32 early in the second quarter, forcing Nick Nurse to take a break.

The Raptors finally had some shots to drop in the first quarter, shooting 50% off the field and over the bow. Fred VanVleet’s 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals accelerated Toronto’s efforts, with Kyle Lowry dropping nine points. For the Celtics, it was Jaylen Brown who continued his glowing start to the season with seven points at team level.

The Raptors made 11 free throws out of Boston’s three, but made only five of those 11 attempts.

Toronto’s hot start hasn’t cooled off much, but Boston is starting to catch up. The Raptors lead 28-20 behind a blistering start from Fred VanVleet, who shoots 4-on-5 from a distance in the first frame. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum have earned 20 points for 12 of the Celtics so far.

The Raptors may have had problems shooting prior to this competition, but you cannot tell from the beginnings of this competition if this is the case. Toronto is 5 against 6 (83. 3%) from beyond the arch to take an early 17-6 lead. Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet each started the 2v2 game from beyond the arc, with the other coming on Kyle Lowry and 1 3-Ball.

The usual for Toronto – Kyle Lowry, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Pascal Siakam and Aron Baynes.

Tremont Waters will start for Boston tonight instead of Marcus Smart. The rest of the starters – Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Daniel Theis and Tristan Thompson – stay the same.

The Celtics will be extremely thin tonight and will miss Marcus Smart (thumb), Jeff Teague (ankle) and of course Kemba Walker (knee) who is not yet fit this season.
