Canada’s path to the 2022 World Cup is becoming clearer

NEWCASTLE, England – Tammy Abraham scored in his third straight club game as Chelsea beat Newcastle 2-0 on Saturday to stay among the English Premier League leaders.

Chelsea took the lead in 10. Minute when Federico Fernandez hit the ball into his own net, and the goal was scored despite Fernandez’s protests that it had been pushed when Mason Monte’s low cross came in.

Timo Werner had a fruitless day in front of the goal, missing once after standing behind the defense and saw that another attempt was offside. However, the German had more success as a provider when he trickled off his own half after two Newcastle defenders before hitting Abraham for an easy first finish for the second goal in the 65th. Minute prepared. That earned Werner praise from manager Frank Lampard.

“He had a couple of chances and sometimes you’re not, but I thought he was a real threat to us,” said Lampard.

“You need players of this quality (to win) . . . and the pace he drives with the ball is something special. He was so selfless and you rely on the players to be top notch. ”

Abraham also scored against Rennes and Sheffield United before the international break. He has four goals in 12 games this season and is a good match for Werner, who was widely expected to fight Abraham for a spot on the line-up after joining Chelsea from Leipzig in the summer.

Taking a goal down yourself did little to shake Newcastle’s defensive approach at first, and the hosts didn’t register until the 82nd. Minute a shot on goal as Edouard Mendy pushed a deflected shot away. Isaac Hayden had previously missed Chelsea’s goal after a defensive mix-up and a speculative long-range shot from Sean Longstaff bounced off the crossbar and was out of the game.

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said he was frustrated with his team’s habit of conceding early goals. Southampton took the lead after seven minutes in Newcastle’s previous game.

“I’m frustrated because we can’t get a result,” said Bruce. “I don’t make excuses, but we’ve played three of the top six in the past few weeks. It was difficult, but there was a lot to like about that performance in the second half. ”
