A backpacker in Byron Bay was banned after a positive COVID case and 84 close contacts were identified.
Police are guarding the Aquarius Backpackers building in the popular resort town of NSW to ensure that the no one leaves for the next seven days.
“I am closely monitoring a situation in Byron Bay in which a positive COVID-19 case and 84 close contacts have been identified at Aquarius Backpackers in Byron Bay,” she wrote.
“My thoughts go with everyone in this situation as it is going to be a difficult time and I will continue to check that people are getting the support they need.”
The hostel is suddenly closed as thousands of students come Left NSW’s north coast for annual school celebrations.
Smith said a major virus outbreak in Byron Bay could be “catastrophic” as the Byron Shire has one of the lowest vaccination rates in the state.
