After a long and winding road, the Australian team will finally arrive in Dhaka today to play a Twenty20 series with five games against Bangladesh from next week.
The Australian contingent is due to arrive at Hazrat Airport in the afternoon Shahjalal International land after the home side returned from Zimbabwe that morning.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board had to overcome several hurdles to convince the Aussies to “grace” Bangladesh with a visit.
The BCB complied with all of Cricket Australia’s requests, including excluding Mushfiqur Rahim from the series for missing the 10-day quarantine deadline due to a family emergency.
Nizamuddin Chowdhury, chief executive officer of the BCB, said, that the main concern of the CA is to ensure the safety of all of their players who experienced a Covid attack in the Caribbean last Friday.
“Place, hotel and in ever the other way we prepare according to the wishes and information from them [CA]. Their main concern is to ensure the bio-bubble and the safety of their players, ”Nizamuddin told the media on Wednesday.
The chance to play Australia outside of an ICC event comes once for the Tigers in a blue moon .
The last time the Aussies arrived in Dhaka to play a series was in 2017 after the series was initially postponed for a year due to “safety concerns”.
In this series, the tourists led by Steve Smith and opener David Warner was his deputy, both of whom will be absent from the upcoming series, with the former injured and the latter the series along with other star players such as Glenn. skips Maxwell, Pat Cummins and Marcus Stoinis.
Overall, Bangladesh has played five bilateral series against Australia in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2017.
Interestingly, Bangladesh also played five ICCs during this period -World championships, which makes it seem that playing a series against the five-time world champions is as special as participating in the biggest competition in the sport for a cricketer from Bangladesh.
Australia is no longer cricket- Powerhouse that it once was, but it is still difficult to convince the cricket team from Down Under to visit Bangladesh.
Bangladesh’s poor record against the team in all formats could be the reason for this lack Interest apply, but on Australia’s last visit to the country they suffered their first Test defeat by the hosts.
The hotly contested series raised hopes on the ground that they would find their way would pave for more series between the two nations, but that was not the case.
There were fears that due to the ongoing pandemic, like last year, the CA would withdraw from this series when it came out due to the Covid crisis a series of two tests.
But the CA held onto its commitment this time around, raising hopes that this series could mark the beginning of more consistent cricket relationships between the boards.
