A tropical low intensified overnight, forming tropical cyclone Imogen, which landed in northwest Queensland and caused winds of 105 km / h in the area.

However, the Bureau of Meteorology expects the Category 1 cyclone to weaken and be downgraded to a tropical low again later on Monday. However, severe weather warnings remain.

Tropical cyclone Imogen formed around 7 p.m. on Sunday and crossed the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria north of Karumba, about 530 kilometers west of Cairns, around 9 p.m. on Sunday.

It produced sustained winds near the middle of 75 km / h with gusts of wind up to 100 km / h. A wind gust of 105 km / h was registered near Normanton on the southwest flank of the cyclone.

From 9 a.m. on Sunday to 7 a.m. on Monday, Normanton received more than 260 millimeters of rain and Mornington Island Airport recorded nearly 200 millimeters.

“Imogen will probably continue to move from east to south-east for a short time [at 21 km / h] and will advance further inland today,” said the cyclone forecast of the weather office.

“The system has recently maintained its strength over land, but later this morning it is expected to gradually transition to a tropical low.

“Gales will likely extend to about 50 miles from the center of the cyclone for the next few hours.

“Winds should generally subside below storm strength on Monday morning as Imogen transitions to a tropical low. Thunderstorms with more isolated, damaging gusts of wind are still possible.

“Heavy rains are observed on the southeast coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria and in the adjacent inland areas, which is likely to result in flash floods, low-lying floods and river flooding.

“In the longer term, the system is expected to run more slowly to the southeast towards the northern tropical and Herbert Lower Burdekin coasts than the deep tropical lows. “
