Australia captain Sam Kerr enjoyed one of their best games since joining the English Women’s Super League when Chelsea scored their hat-trick to win West Ham 3-2.

When the league welcomed fans for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Kerr scored one of the easier triplets of her career when she scored three times from the six-yard box.

But what had been a great afternoon for the striker, who had a difficult season behind her, ended in disappointment when she injured herself driving away on her third goal.

She crashed into a West Ham defense attorney and ended up receiving treatment for an injured hip before limping.

Fortunately, Kerr was still smiling at the end of the game as she was complimented by her colleague Matilda, Emily van Egmond of West Ham.

Kirby’s low cross into the box was passed by Kerr past fellow Australian Mackenzie Arnold in the West Ham goal.

Adriana Leon burst clear and stood up for Rachel Daly to equalize for West Ham shortly after half-time.

Emma Hayes’ side took the second lead 10 minutes later when Arnold crossed the record-breaking intersection of Pernille Harder’s Loop just so Kerr could tap an empty net on the rebound.

The best scorer in the NWSL and W-League, Kerr, finished her hat trick in 68. Minute and shot home again from six meters from Kirby’s precise low pass.

Substitute West Ham Alisha Lehmann immediately made an impact when her pressure resulted in an own goal from Chelsea captain Magdalena Erikkson, which made it 3-2 but held Chelsea.

Chelsea are now unbeaten 12 games at home – a new WSL record – and have closed the gap to current leaders Manchester United with one game in hand to three points.
