What I find fascinating are his never-ending adventures! Larry Harari, 22, remembers discovering Napoleon’s adventures “around 7 or 8 years old, in the youth department of the library in eastern France”, where he is from. As a teenager, he moved to Belgium. “Whether in Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg … Napoleon is everywhere. ”
The student, who has a law degree, is launching, today, the day of commemoration of the bicentenary of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte, a crowdfunding campaign (1). With his brother and a friend – “my two grognards”, he smiles – Larry Harari wishes to go “in the footsteps of the future emperor of the French, from Nice to Venice”. These three Napoleonic history enthusiasts need 2,500 € to finance transport, filming equipment and accommodation. They will leave on June 18, from Villa Masséna in Nice, to Venice. 660 kilometers with ten stops in ten emblematic places of the Italian campaign, in 1796-1797. Napoleon is 27 years old. “He is young, fiery, has long hair,” enthuses Larry Harari. “It is this campaign that makes him known. He is the only one to believe it. He leaves with soldiers who barely have enough to eat. He goes to a country of wealth with the desire to conquer the world. You have nothing, he tells them, but let’s succeed. He is at the service of an ideal ”. The ambition of the project, entitled “An Italian youth, Napoleon conquering Italy”, is “to show what remains of his heritage”. The outcome? A 1h30 documentary broadcast during the summer if all goes as planned.
Far from a backward-looking passion, Larry Harari wants to show the contemporary resonance that Napoleon can have. “He is a young man who invents a new world in an adventurous era. In the midst of a global crisis, characters in action who embody a movement can become, not models, but references. ”
