This Monday, December 20, 2021, France 2 broadcast a new version of the famous Around the World in 80 Days. The miniseries inspired by the work of Jules Verne was eagerly awaited by viewers, except that the original version fans had a very nasty surprise.
Jules Verne was in the spotlight this Monday, December 20 on France 2 with the broadcast of three episodes of the series Around the World in 80 Days worn by David Tennant. The former interpreter of the famous Doctor Who is having a very good month on French screens with the broadcast of the mini-series The Kendrick mystery on TF1 followed by that of this new free adaptation of the cult novel by Jules Verne. After fighting the Daleks, the actor lends his drafts to the famous character of Phileas Fogg.
In the 19th century, this adventurer decided to embark on a crazy gamble: to travel around the world in record time. To do this, he can count on his loyal ally Jean Passepartout, interpreted in this version by the French Ibrahim Koma. If the filming of the mini-series was complicated, it nevertheless started off on the right track. The reviews were pretty rave and this new, more modern version was eagerly awaited by the public… until the arrival of a very bad surprise.
Indeed, if the adventures of Phileas Fogg went well during the first episode, viewers who wanted to watch the series in its original version with subtitles had to review their English basics during the broadcast of episode 2. Because France 2 was wrong in the subtitles, then proposing, again, those of episode 1. An error immediately noticed.
“But it’s too cool to watch around the world in 80 days in original version! Except when France 2 puts the subtitles from the first episode to the second …”. “France 2 you have the subtitles of episode 1 around the world in 80 days on episode 2. It’s not that David Tennant in French is bad but good…” “France 2 would bore you d ‘remove the subtitles from the previous episode to finally display those that correspond to this episode 2 ??? “. Fortunately some fans quickly found a solution. “For those who watch in their original version, you can switch to the hearing impaired subtitles to get the correct ones on Episode 2.” A fallback solution that did not prevent criticism.
