Tottenham boss Antonio Conte made fun of his reputation for having to spend money to win trophies.
Conte arrived at Spurs three weeks ago and has already made it clear that he has reservations about how far his current squad can go.
The Italian was on the verge of joining in the summer before talks failed on the assumption that Conte was demanding too much.
But the 52-year-old, who was successful at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan, says Romelu Lukaku is the only player he has asked to sign.
“It makes me laugh”, said Conte in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. “Let me tell you that at the end of my career I always made money and didn’t spend it.
” I have often worked with young people to train, devalue or rebuild athletes, players who by then had never won.
“All the players who have re-rated thanks to my work. In my career, I’ve only asked about one player who paid a lot. ”
Conte quickly realized how big the task is to get Spurs back to the top of the English game, especially after the spectacular loss to the Slovenian minnows NS Mura in the Europa Conference League.

He insists he has all the facilities to do his job with the club’s state-of-the-art stadium and training center, but says there is a void on the club’s player side.
“The team has to keep up. Today there is a gap between the company’s investments and the sporting results: we have to close it. ”
With Harry Kane, Conte has at least a world-class player, even if the English captain did poorly in the Premier League this season.
Kane’s desire to win trophies is well known and Conte wants to help him.
“He wants to win with this jersey, my goal is to help him achieve his dream,” he added.
“But generally speaking, at the end of the season, it’s best for a coach to say, ‘Thanks, I’ve improved with you’.
” Kane is already a champion, but I’d still like to add one, two, three percent more. “
“I’m enjoying it very much, I am enjoying everything in these three weeks, the atmosphere, working here and I am having a lot of fun,” he said before the Sunday trip to Burnley.
“I did not think that I would miss my job after just four months. It happened, I’m happy and proud to be here, in Tottenham I know this is the right place for me to work the way I like it and I enjoy every moment of my day. ”
