“This is not what we want to see”, reacts this Tuesday the boss of sports of Amazon Europe about the multiple episodes of violence which marked several football matches in France since the beginning of the season. Alex Green said “worried” and announced discussions with the LFP.
Since the start of the season, many incidents have occurred during football matches in France. Violence has punctuated the stadiums during matches in Ligue 1, Ligue 2, but also in the Coupe de France, like this Sunday, December 17 during the match between Paris FC and Lyon. A situation that worries the Ligue 1 broadcaster, Amazon. “This is not what we want to see, it is not what the League, the clubs, the players or the broadcasters, or all those who love football want to see”, affirms this Tuesday the boss of the sports of ‘Amazon Europe, Alex Green, to AFP.
“We speak with the LFP but as a broadcaster it’s not our job to try to deal with this,” said Alex Green. He explains that the subject is “complicated” and “goes beyond football”. Last week, the government announced the systematic and permanent stopping of a professional football match if a player or referee is injured. For the boss of Amazon sports, the role of the broadcaster is played more on the information side. “If the game people want to see is postponed they have to know why and what happened, and how the decision was made. It’s our job, and I think we did it pretty well,” said he does.
Amazon acquired the audiovisual rights to 80% of Ligue 1 matches in June. Football fans must therefore subscribe to the Prime Video platform if they want to be able to see the Sunday evening poster. Since the start of the season, “more than 200 matches” in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 have thus been broadcast on Amazon. The broadcaster estimates that on the posters of Ligue 1 alone, the audience can reach “more than a million” viewers.
