PARIS, September 20 (Reuters) – Alstom and Plastic Omnium announced Monday the signing of a memorandum of understanding to develop hydrogen storage systems that can replace old diesel engines on non-electrified regional rail lines.

The two groups could equip their first trains in France and Italy from next year. The number of lines affected by this transformation is estimated at several thousand in Europe, either by means of electricity storage batteries, or thanks to the hydrogen which makes it possible to produce electricity on board.
