The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Tuesday deplored the enormous difficulties which hamper access to humanitarian aid for some 26 million people in certain areas of Africa.

“In these areas, access to essential services, such as health care, is extremely limited due to armed conflicts and violence in general” estimated the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

According to the ICRC, some 16.8 million people are in this situation in the Sahel and Lake Chad region, while there are 5.5 million in East Africa and 1.5 million in Central Africa.

Patrick Youssef, ICRC director for Africa explains that “clashes between non-state armed groups and government forces prevent humanitarian organizations from reaching those most in need of assistance in Africa. Too often, it is those who do not participate in the fighting who pay the heaviest price in conflicts ”.

He added that “in order to assess the needs and provide assistance as closely as possible to the most vulnerable people, the ICRC endeavors to dialogue with all parties to the conflicts. In Africa, the ICRC has direct contacts with 230 non-state armed groups ”.

Finally, the International Committee of the Red Cross urges all parties to the conflict to authorize and facilitate the rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid intended for civilians in need.
