It was around 8:30 p.m. on Monday July 26 when a terrible accident occurred on the RD930 near Roye in the Somme. A car and a truck carrying 24 tons of vinyl acetate collided.
The toll is heavy: four people who were inside the vehicle died. The shocked driver of the truck was not injured in the accident.
When the emergency services arrived, a security perimeter had to be set up in view of the loading of the heavy vehicle. “Due to a risk of fire, the firefighters first secured the site because the cistern was deformed with a risk of leakage”, specifies on the spot the prosecutor of the Republic of Amiens, Alexandre de Bosschère. In total, 64 firefighters were mobilized and around twenty gendarmes.
In view of the violence of the accident, the victims could not be identified immediately. “It would seem that they are four people from the same family of the Somme: three adults and a child,” said the public prosecutor on Monday evening.
An investigation for manslaughter is underway to try to determine the circumstances of this accident. “What we do know is that the truck driver, who is a 52-year-old man, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We did not find any particular breach in the driving the vehicle, ”he adds.
As of Monday evening, traffic was interrupted on this axis in both directions. She remained disturbed during the night time to evacuate the damaged vehicles. Deviations have been put in place.
A specialized company was contacted to proceed with the pumping of the damaged tank and another to proceed with the evacuation of the truck, once it has been emptied of its contents, indicates the prefecture.
The clearing operations on the road were completed between 5 and 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. Traffic returned to normal during the morning.
