A Melbourne cafe owner worries about going to work after a malicious attack hits his business and threatened his life because of vaccine needs.

The Briki Cafe in Thornbury, north of town, was targeted on Monday with thousands of dollars in damage caused by a brick by the window. “My main window, from which I serve coffee, was … in a million pieces,” said cafe owner Symeon Kandias to ABC. “[I] took a closer look, there was a massive brown brick inside.”

In addition to the damage, the vandals also left a note threatening to burn down the business and endanger the owner’s life.

“The note said if I keep following Dan Andrews they’ll come back and set my shop on fire,” he said. “It was a little confrontational, to be honest.”

He added that he was simply following the state’s COVID guidelines, which included asking guests for proof of vaccination prior to entry. </ "I'm just trying to protect myself and the community," he said. "If we, the little ones, don't follow these rules, we won't survive."

The Victorian Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Jacinta Allan criticized the behavior when she asked her thoughts on the terrible incident.

” Using violence and threats of violence just because you are doing the right thing to protect yourself, your family, your customers and the Victorian community is simply unacceptable behavior, ”she said. “We have seen far too many unacceptable examples of people threatening violence just because people make the decision to do the right thing.” Victoria Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident, but in Meanwhile, Kandias is afraid to return to his shop for fear that the attackers will return.
